Cardiac Vascular Sonographer (Registered)

Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center OverviewThe Cardiac-Vascular Sonographer functions in a dual-role position as both Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer.
As such, must conform to the job roles and responsibilities of that both provide:
The Cardiac-Vascular Sonographer functions under the direction of the Manager or Chief or Lead Sonographer and is responsible for performing all cardiac imaging; which includes, if performed at your designated facility, adult, pediatric, trans esophageal and stress echocardiograms.
As well as perform all vascular imaging including:
, carotid duplex imaging, Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) with and without exercise, AAA Screening, Aorta, and upper and lower extremity arterial and venous scans.
Experience with venous reflux studies preferred but not required (if applicable).
Perform measurements and calculations according to laboratory protocol, provides written or an oral summary of preliminary findings to the interpreting Physician, is responsible for the safety and well-being of all patients in the department, must possess the ability to communicate effectively with the patient(s) and health care team, must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.
Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative.
Have the knowledge and ability to obtain a quality diagnostic study properly and safely.
The Cardiac-Vascular Sonographer may also be asked to inject/administer Ultrasound Image Enhancing Agents as well as saline bubble studies.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Must be available to take call, work weekends and Holidays on a rotating basis (if applicable to your location).
Core Responsibilites and Essential FunctionsEquipmento Maintains clinical competency in all areas of echocardiography and vascular studies through practice and continuing educationo Demonstrates experience in performing all studies and modalitieso Consults with Cardiologist and other available resources to increase knowledgeo Maintains registry certificationo Maintain equipment in working order.
Perform routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and report any equipment malfunction to Chief Technologist or Echo Lab Manager.
o Reports problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider, so that problem can be corrected in a timely manner.
o Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment in accordance with infection control policy and department cleaning schedule.
Patient Careo Verifies proper clinician order for procedure.
o Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
o Explains test procedures to patients; Addresses concerns and answers questions appropriatelyo Follows established procedures for the administration of contrast medias so that no patient condition deteriorates, and no patient suffers undue pain, due to error or poor technique.
o Ensures that all studies have proper patient identification and right and left marker are utilized appropriately.
o Reviews ultrasound images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
o Responds to emergency situations and provides for the restocking of the crash cart and maintenance of life support equipment.
o Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed.
o Observes patient condition and properly evaluates situations when physician intervention is necessary so that no patient condition deteriorates.
o Verifies correct identity of patient using 2 unique identifiers prior to performing a procedure per hospital policy and procedure.
o Ensures patient's privacy and comfort is accommodated.
Maintains patient's dignity throughout the exam/procedure.
o Demonstrates competence in the determination and application of appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques based on the age of patients.
o Organizes schedule, time and priorities so that required activities are accomplished within designated time frames.
o Follows physician's instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
o Demonstrates proficiency with loading and operating power injection.
o Uses critical thinking skills.
o Dialogs with patient/familyo Asks clarifying questions.
o Seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
o Understands, demonstrates and documents preprocedural verification and Time Out process when appropriate.
o Demonstrates and understands pre-and-post procedural care.
o Preps the patient for the procedure.
o Demonstrates and understands sterile techniqueo Ability to perform all Vascular Ultrasound and Echocardiography exams.
Education and Communicationo Patiently and clearly explains purpose and nature of exam to patient prior to starting of procedure, so as to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation using AIDET; Acknowledge, Introduce, Discuss, Explain, and Thank you of all patients and family members.
o Ensures that patient's questions, concerns or contraindications are satisfactorily addressed, notifying physician when this cannot be accomplished, prior to the initiation of the procedure.
o Participates in the orientation and training of departmental employees.
o Provides patients with preparatory instruction and explanation of procedures.
o Required documentation is concise, legible and includes precise terminology.
o Reads email each day scheduled to work and follows through with assignment.
o Completes mandatory departmental and Hospital-wide education without prompting.
o Maintains appropriate patient care documentation, including echocardiograph tapes, patient charts, and logs and appropriately identifies procedure performed for accurate charging.
o Maintains credentials and documentation to support continued lab accreditationo Develops and maintains appropriate policies and procedures related to echocardiographyQuality Controlo Consistently produces acceptable images, as evidenced by radiologist feedback and quality audits, with a 95% first time acceptance rate.
o Performs echocardiograms, treadmill, bicycle or stress echoes according to physician orders and established practice and procedureso Confers with physician to establish requirements for non-standard examinations and determines technical factors to satisfy requirementso Performs pre-procedure verification process, according to hospital policy.
o Performs appropriate measurements and calculations according to laboratory protocolEnsures that equipment is fully operational prior to each use, by checking for proper calibration and operating deficiencies.
o Sends all studies to PACS immediately after completion, prints CD's as needed.
o Studies that have been reported after hours by teleradiography are printed and scanned into PACS, if applicable.
o Completes all studies in RIS before completing in PACS.
o Prints completed log sheet from teleradiography and submits to Radiologist, if applicableo Follows infection control policiesOperationso Restocks linens and supplies, and maintains the department in clean and orderly condition.
o Transports patients, positions patients, and helps them on and off procedure table.
o Performs patient charging activities on the day the service is rendered.
o Applies shielding, supportive and immobilization devices and equipment.
o Willingly lends knowledge and assistance to others upon request as needed and routinely as time is available, without prompting, so that all working time is used for departmental advantage.
o Performs routine duties of clerical and support personnel in accordance with procedure when warranted to ensure continuity and quality of services.
o Keeps supervisor informed on all responsibilities on an ongoing basis, ensuring prompt notification in the event of problems or potential problems.
o Maintains an individual productivity rate equal to other co-workers.
o Ability to operate all work stations associated with the US department.
o Ability to push / retrieve images from the Ultrasound console to PACS.
